The word ‘horary’ sounds kind of spooky. To my mind, it conjures up visions of toads and bats, black pointy hats and witches’ warts; of spells being chanted for good or ill. Unfortunately it means nothing so colourful! It comes from the Latin root word ‘horus’, meaning hour, as does the word ‘horoscope’. In the words of Dr Marc Edmund Jones, a well respected astrologer from the early 20th Century:
But, as I write these words from my imaginary cave, I hope to inspire your interest in this ancient branch of astrology. Originating in ancient times as far back as the fifth century B.C., horary astrology is concerned with answering a question. Yes, just one question. None of this psychological babble of the modern astrologers. If you want to know something specific, ask a horary astrologer. In the 17th Century, a British astrologer, William Lilly (1602-1681) spent most of his life in his imaginary cave working on answers for his clients to vitally important questions of the time, such as:
Fortunately he documented these fascinating questions and how to find their answers by erecting charts and studying the information found therein. His tome “Christian Astrology” remains the bible of the modern horary astrologer, although as a student I was horrified to find that he used the vernacular of the time for his writing, and interpreting his English language was almost as difficult as learning the subject matter. So, if you are currently concerned that your nasty co-worker may have bewitched you, or that you should move to Uganda and start life afresh, or perhaps you have a more serious concern, then you have come to the right place. The beauty of horary astrology is that you do not need accurate birth details to ensure a good result. A chart is erected for the precise time the question is asked of the astrologer. This works, based on the premise that the question is ‘born’ at a particular significant minute of time. The strength, position and aspects of the planets in the chart at this specific moment hold not only the outcome, but also describe what is happening at the given time, and what led to the question being posed. The horary astrologer interprets the chart which can be quite a complicated business, and may involve the use of many a newt’s eye or tiger’s tooth in the brew, which of course must be simmering on the cauldron as she works. (That is completely untrue, and I must practise disciplining my imagination.) Now of course there are many rules and regulations in this branch of astrology. The question must be clearly framed so that the astrologer fully comprehends exactly what it is the querant (the person asking the question) wishes to know. The querant must sincerely want an honest answer, and it should be important to the querant. Silly questions will be tossed in the cauldron!! And, because the chart tells us so much about the circumstances surrounding the question, certain questions will not be answered if they are trivial or testing. There are also many restrictions on what can and cannot be dealt with, and these are called the Strictures, or Considerations Before Judgement. A good horary astrologer will sort through these in order to guarantee that their work is not impeded by anything untoward, and this may also involve tossing some questions into the cauldron. The querant must bear in mind that the outcome may not be what they wanted. For example, a client comes wishing to know if her boyfriend loves her. The chart says no, he has his eye on a redhead down the road. There can be tears and much disappointment (and this only from the astrologer, imagine how the client feels!) Or a man enquires if he will succeed with a job interview, which he truly wants, only to find that the job will go to another, who although not as well qualified for the job, is an acquaintance of one of the members of the Board. Another blow, but please, no blame should be attached to the astrologer – this is tantamount to shooting the messenger. Clearly, if you ask for an answer, you must be prepared for the truth. In the coming weeks and months, I invite you to email your questions to me, and I will fire up the cauldron, and tinker with your queries to the best of my ability. Please note that these answers will be published on this site, so if your dilemma is of a private nature, this forum may not be suitable for you.
