The end of the Aztecs came suddenly. For some time King Montezuma 11 had been concerned about evil omens, the appearance of a mysterious comet and the prophecy by neighbouring king Nezahualpilli that strangers would soon rule the land. He had good reason to worry, because according to legend, Quetzalcoatl was due to reappear as a bearded conqueror in a One-Reed year to reclaim his kingdom and 1519 was such a year. Nezahualpilli was so sure of his seer's predictions that he wagered his whole kingdom against three turkeys on the result of five ritual ball games. Montezuma won the first two then proceeded to lose the next three in a row.
History records that Hernan Cortes landed in April 1519 with a band of approximately five hundred men, inspired by the great wealth of Montezuma’s kingdom. To unify his army and add to their motivation he ordered all ships burnt in the Tabasco harbour upon arrival. Over the next two years, Cortes played upon the neighbouring tribes hatred of the Aztecs, integrating them into a formidable army. Eventually Montezuma accepted the bearded Cortes into his palace but it proved a diplomatic disaster that cost the King his life, and his kingdom. The end came when Tenochtitlan fell to Spain on August 13 1521. The fall of the Aztec Empire owed as much to courage as to the superstitious Aztec obsession that time ruled the heart and spirit of man.
