Planting by the moon

with Sherrynne Dalby
(see tables below for dates)

By following the phase and sign of the moon, we are tuning into the earth/sun/moon rhythm. This rhythm is primary in the well being of living things on earth. By planting at the right time we improve the survival and growth rate, whether it be plant or animal.
The same goes for all things related to man and beast and can be a useful guide in planning when we do certain things, for maximum benefit.

There are a few simple rules to follow and it is not difficult. When the moon is in its waxing or growth phase (new – full), is the best time for planting anything that grows above the ground. This is also the time for cutting, trimming or pruning for regrowth.

From full to the next new moon is the waning phase and this is the time for planting anything that grows beneath the earth. It is also the best for pruning, trimming etc when you don’t want regrowth.

The only exception is for peas and beans, which although growing above the earth are planted on the waning moon.

The other thing is to know which sign the moon is in as to whether it is fertile or barren.

But we have done that all for you here at AstrologyOz, you just need to read below.

For gardeners who follow the sky, lunar planting rhythms offer a traditional framework that connects cultivation cycles with the changing face of the moon. The basic idea is that the moon's phase and position can be observed alongside practical gardening tasks, helping gardeners time their activities with a sense of natural rhythm. AstrologyOz gathers this kind of information as part of its broader focus on Australian astrology and planetary movements, presenting lunar guidance alongside other celestial data for readers who enjoy working with both garden and sky.

The planting guidance offered on this site distinguishes between periods described as above ground and below ground, with each phase suggesting different priorities. Above-ground times are associated with leafy crops and fresh starts, while below-ground periods are linked with root vegetables and soil-focused work. The site also acknowledges intermediate or "OK" categories, recognising that gardening rarely follows strict rules and that conditions in the garden, along with local weather, always play a part in deciding what to do and when.

Beyond planting, the lunar guide includes practical tasks such as preparing garden beds, turning compost, and managing pests. Pruning is another area where the moon's phase is thought to matter, with regrowth encouraged at certain times and discouraged at others. Even personal grooming choices, like hair cutting or hair removal, are mentioned as activities that some readers prefer to align with particular lunar conditions, reflecting the way traditional lunar wisdom has long extended beyond the vegetable patch into everyday routines.

Lunar planting advice sits naturally within an astrology-focused resource because both traditions rely on careful observation of celestial patterns. AstrologyOz presents moon phase data and planetary information together, making it a convenient place for readers who want to check ingresses, stations, and void-of-course periods while also planning their week in the garden. The site frames these tools as guides rather than guarantees, inviting readers to experiment and notice how lunar timing feels in their own soil and climate.

Australian gardeners bring their own considerations to lunar planting, since southern hemisphere seasons run counter to the calendars written for northern observers. Local climate, frost dates, and rainfall patterns always take precedence over any astrological timetable, and lunar guidance is best treated as an extra layer of awareness rather than a replacement for horticultural knowledge. By offering moon-specific planting suggestions alongside general planetary updates, AstrologyOz provides a distinctly Australian perspective on an ancient and widely shared gardening tradition.
